5 mistakes an entrepreneur should avoid

Growing up with parents who are entrepreneurs and being around so many entrepreneurs, I have been able to weigh and see what makes one tick and the other discouraged. Being an entrepreneur is not an easy task, it requires skills, commitment and making sacrifices. That’s why it’s so important to understand some of the mistakes that affect many entrepreneurs in the labour market and try not to make them.

  1. Expecting financial rewards right away: Starting a business is a huge success and one should be proud of whatever business they have chosen to start. However, it’s unrealistic to expect financial rewards right away. I would use what I call “baby illustration”. When one has a baby, you don’t expect your child to grow up right away and start taking care of you. It starts with you taking care of the child, investing your time, your money and resources in him/her. In the same way, we should treat our businesses like our babies, be passionate about it, don’t go into it to make money quick. You need to be patient and also realistic, I understand it’s wonderful to dream and want a huge success but you don’t want your business folding up because you couldn’t finance it anymore because you were expecting to have made money after 3 months to keep it going and that didn’t happen.
  2. Trying to do everything yourself: One of the skills required from a good leader (entrepreneur in this case) is the ability to hire effective people. Learn to delegate, period. If you don’t, you wouldn’t get the financial success you are trying to attain. It’s either you work alone and be small OR accept other people can do it, share the work and be big. Doing everything will cause you to burn out and you actually don’t get to focus on areas of your expertise.
  3. Explore new options: We have probably heard the saying, “change is the only constant in life”. *Old folks talking about back in my day*, well it’s not their “day” anymore. Things are changing, we understand the laws don’t change, any man that jumped from a building 10 years ago fell to the ground, same thing would happen this year. Law of gravity doesn’t change but we have to be adaptable to what changes. A newspaper that isn’t online now is not doing itself any good, keep up with the times. Go with what is working now and be ready to make changes in the future. Not losing your core values though, you don’t want to get lost changing and changing.
  4. Ignoring social media: This is also due to the fact that entrepreneurs aren’t ready to make a change. There’s no business that shouldn’t be online now. No business! The internet is worldwide, your competition isn’t your next door neighbor anymore. There’s a tech revolution right now and entrepreneurs can’t afford to be left out now. And they are cheap tools that are very effective, so why should anyone in this day still make this mistake?
  5. Not being passionate about your business: Entrepreneurs should try not to be in just for the money. Be excited about what your company stands for and not just how much money it’s going to bring. If you want fulfilment in life, you would go for what you are passionate about. You can invest in other businesses for the money, perhaps even to boost your company but you need something to be doing something you are passionate about
