Kiki Series 7

Kiki is a weekly series. Click for episode 06.

My last YouTube video hit the 10,000 views mark. A little over 3 weeks ago, I started my YouTube channel where I put up videos in form of picture slides and short clips and my voice in the background, like a presentation of a topic. My topics were from a broad range of life issues.

My last video was sort of like a radio show. On that video, I had my first guest- Fred Ita. Fred recently launched an awareness initiative for drug abuse after his brother suffered from a drug overdose. He said the biggest problem they faced was rehabilitation after his recovery. He had some humorous stories about the traditional rehabilitation homes they were referred to. The idea was to entertain and address an issue, as is the trend these days. I was really excited. I was working again.

The long term goal however, was to start a radio station. Most of the programs would be dedicated towards addressing societal issues and giving information that generally make life easier for people.

This was a journey I was looking forward to. At the moment, I was enjoying my nice dinner with my biggest fan Toju. He suggested a few people for me to submit proposals to. I teased him for playing the 'supportive boyfriend' card. I was hardly the supportive girlfriend though. I picked on what I considered to be flaws in his acting and at some point, he had gotten upset and said that I never had anything good to say. So I was making conscious efforts to get better. In my defence, I enjoyed going for movie premieres so I could guarantee that I'll always be there by his side.

After the dinner, I went home. Daniel was home surprisingly and my parents were visiting. It wasn't unusual for my mum to be here, some weeks it felt like she lived here, but my dad was here as well. That was quite bizarre and I wondered if I should panic. Toju would be meeting my dad for the first time and I prayed to God that he was in a good mood. "Kiki, I've been waiting for you to come" he said "so you don't have a curfew here". He joked. I was relieved, he was in a good mood. So no need to panic I thought. I hugged him, I'm a bit of a daddy's girl; he gave me the nickname Kiki and it has become my identity. I then introduced Toju to my dad and my mum said "doesn't he look familiar Dapo?".

"You know everyone now, I can't keep up" my dad said. Then he said to Toju "I believe we are meeting for the first time". Toju nodded "yes sir". He seemed really gentle. "You shy?" I whispered in his ear and smiled at him. Eventually he loosened up and it was a pretty cool night.

I appreciated days like this. I ignored the fact that my parents still think I'm jobless and kept throwing options at me. I focused more on their humour.

Better days to come, I hoped.
